The Digestive Dilemma: Exploring Options for Stomach Pain Management

Stomach pain can be an uncomfortable condition that can be alleviated with some simple home remedies, including heating pads, peppermint tea and apple cider vinegar.



While most stomachaches are harmless, those accompanied by bloody stools or breathing difficulties should seek medical advice immediately. Instead, try these natural and scientifically-backed remedies for stomach pain to ease their symptoms.

Baking soda

Baking soda (commonly referred to as sodium bicarbonate) is an alkaline substance often used to soothe heartburn and acid indigestion, similar to many over-the-counter antacids. Before turning to this solution however, people should consult their physician as baking soda may interfere with absorption of certain medications as well as being high in sodium content; long term use should only be utilized as an emergency measure against acid reflux symptoms.

Acid reflux symptoms typically include a burning sensation in the chest, an unpleasant taste in the mouth and difficulty swallowing. These issues are typically brought on by spicy foods, alcohol or caffeine consumption, being overweight or pregnant and smoking cigarettes or pregnant.

Ginger

Ginger is one of the few traditional remedies that is held in equal regard by both medical doctors and natural healers, for its medicinal and culinary uses. Ginger comes from the Zingiberacea family and features as a knotted underground stem (called rhizome). It adds zesty flavors to both savory dishes and sweet treats while offering relief for symptoms such as upset stomach, nausea, gas and menstrual cramping.

Ginger's phenol compounds, including gingerols and shogaols, contain antispasmodic agents which relax stomach contractions. Studies have proven its ability to decrease nausea and vomiting during motion sickness, pregnancy and cancer chemotherapy treatments; additionally it also relieves nausea caused by indigestion.

Suck on some slices of peeled raw ginger root or drink ginger tea to get relief from nausea, or try ginger supplements, chews, or extracts that are easily swallowed. Peppermint tea or candy may also help soothe an upset stomach. Alternatively, consider trying a ginger-based vapor rub containing ingredients like eucalyptus oil, camphor, or nutmeg known for pait ka dard.
