Boost Your Fertility: The Role of Antioxidants and Supplements in Male Reproductive Health

Antioxidants are chemicals that deactivate free radicals that damage cells, including sperm. According to one study, taking vitamin C supplements increases sperm motility and count.




Vitamin C:


Vitamin C is an antioxidant that works to combat free radicals that damage cells, including sperm. Oxidative stress has also been linked with reduced count and motility of sperm, with studies demonstrating its ability to improve quality and health of sperm through supplementation with Vitamin C.


One study demonstrated how daily vitamin C supplementation of more than 1,000 mg was significantly beneficial to heavy smokers (Dawson et al, 1992). Men with varicocele who took a multi-antioxidant supplement containing N-acetyl cysteine (NAC), vitamin C, vitamin E, vitamin A zinc selenium and magnesium also experienced significant improvements in sperm counts, motility and morphology (Lenzi et al, 2005).


D-aspartic acid appears to help regulate testosterone release and synthesis, with one clinical study of Furosap, made from fenugreek seeds, showing men with hormonally-related low sperm count/motility who took this supplement reported significant improvements in their semen. Ashwagandha was found more effective than placebo at increasing sperm count in one study (Ahmed et al, 2013), available as supplements or herbal medicine for man power.


Vitamin D:


Antioxidants are natural substances that protect our bodies against oxidative damage, and have been found to play an integral part in male fertility. A recent Cochrane review demonstrated how antioxidants such as vitamins C and E as well as zinc and carnitine could increase semen fertility while improving sperm motility and morphology.


Vitamin D is an integral component of increasing sperm count and motility, according to one study. A combination of vitamin D, calcium and folic acid was shown to significantly improve count, motility and morphology while other research indicates a high dose of vitamin D can lower the frequency of oligospermia - an abnormally low number of sperm.


Folic acid, a water-soluble B vitamin, is vital to producing quality sperm. According to studies, taking folic acid supplements has been found to enhance quality sperm production while protecting against genetic mutations leading to azoospermia.

Folic Acid:


Folic acid, also known as folate, is a B vitamin that assists with DNA synthesis and cell division while acting as an antioxidant to protect cells from damage. Folic acid can be found naturally in leafy green vegetables like spinach, brussels sprouts and cabbage as well as fortified cereals and breads; studies have also demonstrated its efficacy at improving men's fertility by increasing sperm count, motility and quality through improving DNA methylation as well as modulating MTHFR expression; it has also shown results at decreasing oxidative stress within male sperm.


Many supplements containing both zinc and folic acid, two key elements in sperm development, are promoted as natural ways to boost semen quality and count. Tribulus terrestris is another supplement that may assist, known for enhancing male fertility and increasing libido. One study gave men 1.75g of its powdered root over 12 weeks and discovered its effectiveness at increasing both sperm count and motility.


CoQ10, an essential amino acid produced naturally in humans and animals alike, plays a key role in hormone production such as testosterone and luteinizing hormone (LH). A study published by Advances in Sexual Medicine demonstrated how taking CoQ10 daily helped increase both concentration and sex timing medicine.
