Boost Your Chances: Supplements for Better Sperm Count and Motility

Medication may enter the seminal fluid and have direct impacts on sperm count or motility, potentially contributing to low levels. If a medication is responsible, switching it or adding antioxidant supplements could help boost its effect.

Vitamin D:


Vitamin D is an essential nutrient to the health of our bodies. It helps form bones and maintain calcium balance levels within our systems; in men it plays an integral part in reproductive system development - studies have confirmed this importance; for instance one found that men who consumed plenty of fruits and vegetables had higher sperm concentrations - likely thanks to anti-oxidants like Vitamin C or Lycopene which boost sperm motility.


Another study of 86 infertile men with low levels of vitamin D demonstrated that supplementing with 4000 IU per day of vitamin D for three months significantly enhanced their sperm motility. A recent clinical trial discovered that selenium and vitamin E supplements combined can increase motility, morphology, damage from free radicals, as well as decrease damage due to free radicals. While taking too much can be dangerous, the amount necessary for health can often be relatively small.


Fenugreek:


Fenugreek is a herb traditionally used as a condiment in India, but more recently has also become popular as an aid to fertility. Therefore, for optimal fertility health it is best to eat a diet rich in fruits, vegetables and whole grains and avoid processed food which often contains trans fats and unhealthy oils; many canned and plastic products also contain bisphenol A which has an adverse impact on sperm health.


Ashwagandha and zinc can both help increase sperm count. A three-month regimen of taking daily ashwagandha supplements was shown to improve both motility and count, as well as raise testosterone and LH levels, according to one study. Fenugreek has also been found to boost count while

Omega-3 fatty acids found in fish and plants may also help increase sperm count, while zinc may only work if there is deficiency of this mineral. Folate has also proven effective; one study demonstrated how using D-aspartic acid plus folic acid doubled sperm concentration and motility among men with reduced motility/morphology.
